SLB and SBM Offshore signal a broader move toward data-led collaboration as FPSO operators chase efficiency, uptime, and smarter decisions
6 Feb 2026

A partnership between SLB and SBM Offshore is highlighting a shift in how floating production, storage and offloading vessels are operated, as offshore producers look to digital tools to manage rising costs and tighter performance demands.
Rather than centring on new vessels or major hardware upgrades, the collaboration focuses on improving day-to-day operations on existing FPSOs. Industry analysts say this reflects a growing recognition that future competitiveness in offshore production will depend more on operational efficiency than on expanding capacity.
FPSOs generate large volumes of data from wells, processing facilities and marine systems. Much of this information has traditionally been fragmented across different systems, limiting its value for operators. The SLB and SBM Offshore initiative aims to integrate these data streams and translate them into insights that can be used in near real time.
The partners say this could allow earlier detection of equipment issues, more predictable maintenance planning and more stable production profiles. Analysts view the approach as part of a wider move towards digital partnerships in offshore energy, where operators and technology providers combine expertise rather than developing systems independently.
“What was once seen as experimental is now being built into core operations,” said one offshore consultant, noting that digital platforms are increasingly deployed across the full lifecycle of offshore assets.
For FPSO operators, the potential benefits include fewer unplanned shutdowns, better visibility over complex systems and more confident operational decisions. These improvements could help reduce operating costs and extend asset life, outcomes that are attracting greater attention from investors and regulators.
The shift also brings challenges. Digital platforms must comply with strict safety and cybersecurity requirements, while offshore crews need confidence in data-driven recommendations. Regulators are expected to insist on clear human oversight of automated systems. Most analysts, however, see these hurdles as manageable.
Tools such as Cognite Data Fusion, accessed through SLB’s Lumi environment, are helping standardise and contextualise industrial data, supporting wider adoption. What began as a technical enhancement is increasingly viewed as a strategic necessity, as digital capability moves from a support role to the centre of FPSO operations.
