The offshore oil industry is getting a clearer picture of its future, and it looks both smarter and cleaner. At a major industry gathering in Lisbon, MODEC signaled a decisive shift in how floating production systems will be designed and built.

Speaking at the Deepwater Development Conference, Boyd Howell, the company’s Director of Sales and Marketing, described a new standard for FPSOs. Instead of retrofitting vessels with emissions controls and automation later, these features will be embedded from the earliest design stages. The approach reflects a broader industry pivot toward efficiency and environmental performance as core requirements, not optional upgrades.

That vision is already taking shape in the field. MODEC’s Bacalhau FPSO, operating in waters deeper than 2,000 meters off Brazil, is the first to use a combined cycle gas turbine system. By capturing and reusing waste heat, the vessel generates additional power without increasing fuel consumption, significantly lowering its carbon intensity.

The results are notable. Bacalhau’s emissions profile is roughly half the global average for similar assets, positioning it as a benchmark for future developments. It also signals that lower-emission offshore production is not theoretical but already operational at scale.

MODEC is carrying that model forward into new projects. The company is leading engineering and construction work for ExxonMobil’s Uaru and Hammerhead FPSOs in Guyana’s Stabroek Block, both designed with high output and integrated efficiency systems. These vessels will reflect the same philosophy of building performance and sustainability into the foundation.

Howell also traced the industry’s digital evolution, from early automation to today’s data-driven intelligence. The next phase, he suggested, will treat every FPSO as both a production hub and a low-emissions platform from day one.

The timing is critical. With a wave of new projects approaching final investment decisions, the choices made now will shape offshore production for decades. For the industry, the message is becoming harder to ignore: future competitiveness will depend as much on carbon performance as on output.
